March 20: Preserving the Indigenous Past

Learn about preserving a past that few people know existed. At 6 p.m. on Wednesday, March 20, 2024, Greg Olson will talk about the Indigenous people who live in Missouri. The presentation will be held in the Friends Room of the Columbia Public Library. All of CoMo Preservation’s meetings are free and open to the public.

An independent researcher and author who lives in Columbia, Greg is the author of seven books and several articles about Native American history in Missouri and the Midwest.

His most recent book, Indigenous Missourians: Ancient Societies to the Present, was published in 2023. His 2008 book, The Ioway in Missouri, won the Missouri Humanities Governor’s Humanities Award for Distinguished Literary Achievement. His 2016 publication, Ioway Life: Reservation and Reform, 1837-1860, was named a Kansas Notable Book in 2017.

He also served as the Curator of Exhibits and Special Projects at the Missouri State Archives from 2000-2018. From 1998-1999, he was the director and curator at the Boone County Historical Society.

CoMo Preservation is devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions prevent the destruction of historic architecture. Original period styles might be replicated, but will forever lack the social history of authentic structures.
