In 2023, CoMo Preservation learned about two historic cemeteries located within John W. Alspaugh Park through Bruce Alspaugh. Since then, Bruce Alspaugh has led several guided tours of the park, sharing the history and significance of these burial grounds. CoMo Preservation has also been meeting with the Genealogical Society of Boone County and Central Missouri, which is taking the lead in researching those buried in the cemeteries. This research will support future interpretive signage to be installed by the City of Columbia.
Inspired by the April 30 presentation on cemetery cleanup and care—co-sponsored by CoMo Preservation, the Boone County Historical Society, and the Genealogical Society of Boone County and Central Missouri—and led by Nancy Thompson, Darrel Strope, and Craig Haugen, CoMo Preservation will host hands-on cemetery cleanup events at the two historic cemeteries in Alspaugh Park: Antioch Cemetery and Hinkson Creek Cemetery.
We are pleased to partner with our co-sponsors, the Genealogical Society of Boone County and Central Missouri and the Boone County Historical Society for this event. This volunteer workday will focus on respectful, preservation-minded care of the cemeteries using appropriate techniques.
The event is free and open to the public; however, reservations are required to assist with planning and coordination.
