Missouri Theatre Event
On Tuesday, June 24, 2025, we had the great privilege of hearing Lili Vianello and Robert Wells speak about the history and preservation of the Missouri Theatre.
Lili’s parents, Hugo and Lucy Vianello, were instrumental in the restoration of the Theatre, and Robert served as head of operations. The presentation began with a newspaper account of the Theatre’s grand opening in 1928, setting the stage for a captivating look at its nearly 100-year legacy. They shared photographs of the building under construction and revealed fascinating details—including the installation of a temporary train track along Ninth Street solely to transport construction materials to the site. Lili also offered a personal memory of checking the boiler twice a day with only a flashlight—because it was too costly to keep the lights on.
We are grateful to Mizzou for granting us access to the Theatre, including its hidden spaces. Special thanks to John, Evan, and the tech crew for being such generous hosts. And we extend our deepest appreciation to our amazing tour guides—Jill, Jennifer, and Kurt—who led more than 60 participants upstairs, downstairs, and everywhere in between, offering a behind-the-scenes look at areas rarely seen by the public.
Finally, a heartfelt thank you to Lili and Robert for their moving and insightful presentation. We left with a deepened appreciation for the Missouri Theatre and for all the efforts that have gone into preserving this iconic treasure for our community.
