“A Legacy of Faith” at the Second Missionary Baptist Church, January 20th

On January 20th, 2026, CoMo Preservation was honored to co-sponsor an event at the Second Missionary Baptist Church on Broadway, a historic building with a historic congregation – one which continues to contribute so much to our town and its history.

Attendance for this event, held in the church’s large, historic sanctuary, was good, with a mix of community members who have never been in the historic church before and others who know the building well, including Barbra Horrell, long-time church member and a notable local activist and community organizer (read more about all of her work in this blog post from 2024). The event was in the late evening, but those who arrived early were able to see the church’s large stained glass windows – some of its most unique architectural features – set to their best advantage as the sunset streamed through them in colorful glory.

After a brief announcement of CoMo Preservation’s upcoming events and programs by Elena Vega, the event moved into its main focus – Reverend Clyde Ruffin’s informative discussion of the history of the church and its congregation and their “Legacy of Faith” (the title of the event).

We were treated to a showing of Second Missionary Baptist’s 2019 documentary, after which Reverend Ruffin took questions and shared some of his comprehensive knowledge of the church. Questions and topics brought up included the unique (and original) stained glass windows, restoration of the sanctuary, the case of the missing steeple (read the minutes, in our Archives, to learn about the speculations!), the notable Columbians who have been congregants or otherwise connected with the church – including Blind Boone, the Lange family, James Scott and his family, and the Reverend James Caston, to whom the church’s memorial garden is dedicated – and the aspirations the various clergy have had throughout the years for the church, which have resulted in developments like the Christian Education Center attached to the original 1890s building.

An informative event held in a beautiful space, led by the man who knows the church best – Reverend Clyde Ruffin, who has been pastor to Second Missionary Baptist for over 20 years. Wish you’d been there? Go to the Archives on our website to read the minutes, see photos, and more – you’ll feel like you were!

CoMo Preservation is devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions prevent the destruction of historic architecture. Original period styles might be replicated, but will forever lack the social history of authentic structures. The preservation of historic places and spaces gives people a sense of place and boosts Columbia’s economy. You can get involved by becoming a member, volunteering, signing up for our newsletter attending an event, or donating.
