Locust Fifth Graders Sketch Columbia’s Historic Architecture

In February, CoMo Preservation had the pleasure of partnering with Columbia Public Schools to bring local history and architecture to life for a group of enthusiastic 5th grade students from Locust Street Expressive Arts Elementary School.

CoMo Preservation volunteers Dan Killebrew and Matt Fetterly led the students on a stroll through The District to explore the history and architecture of two iconic downtown buildings: the The Herald Building and the Hall Theatre.

During the tour, students learned how these historic buildings have shaped the story of downtown Columbia. Dan shared insights into architectural design while Matt added historical context, telling stories about the people and events connected to these buildings and their role in Columbia’s development.

After learning about the buildings, the students had the chance to become architectural observers themselves. With paper and pencil in hand, they spent time carefully sketching the Herald Building and Hall Theatre, capturing the shapes, details, and character of the historic structures they had just learned about.

CoMo Preservation is proud to serve as a Partner in Education with Columbia Public Schools, helping bring local history and architecture into learning experiences for students. Our mission is to preserve the historic architecture of Columbia, Missouri. Through educational opportunities like this, we work toward our broader vision: promoting awareness, appreciation, and preservation of Columbia’s historic properties, neighborhoods, and landscapes through education, advocacy, and restoration.

Events like this remind us that preservation begins with awareness—and sometimes all it takes is a short walk, a few stories, and a sketchbook to spark curiosity about the places that shape our community.

If you enjoy featuring historic architecture through art, we invite you to participate in our ART-chitecture Contest. The contest is free and open to all ages and artistic mediums. Entries are due April 1. Learn more at https://www.comopreservation.org/art-chitecturecontest

CoMo Preservation is devoted to helping homeowners, landlords, and institutions prevent the destruction of historic architecture. Original period styles might be replicated, but will forever lack the social history of authentic structures. The preservation of historic places and spaces gives people a sense of place and boosts Columbia’s economy. You can get involved by becoming a member, volunteering, signing up for our newsletter attending an event, or donating.
